The Day in Hotel Leadership: Kempinski Exits, AI Readiness, a 2027 Budget

Kempinski lost its group chief executive and four senior colleagues, its owners are weighing a sale, and the trade spent the same day on AI readiness and 2027 budgeting.

Skift published the Kempinski departures on Monday 19 October at 17:37 UTC. The byline is Rafat Ali. The sourcing is multiple people, and no company statement sits under it.

By Tuesday morning the trade had it. Hotel vor9 at 07:50. Travelnews.ch at 08:49. Tophotel at 11:57. Hospitality Net at 13:05, under a headline that opens with the word Report.

Five names, four confirmed exits

Barbara Muckermann has left as group chief executive after nearly two and a half years. Gordon Drake has left as chief financial officer. Karin Raguin has left as chief human resources officer. Frank Veenstra has left as chief development officer. Barbara Biffi has left as chief brand officer.

Massimo Brancaleoni, chief commercial officer, has resigned. Skift recorded his exit date as unclear.

Hospitality Net counts six others. The sixth is Riko van Santen, chief information officer, who joined Scenic Group in the same role on 1 September 2026. He left before this wave.

Kempinski answered with a refusal

Hotel vor9 asked for comment and got one line, in translation: “We ask for understanding that we are not commenting on the current situation and therefore cannot issue a statement at this time.”

Tophotel recorded the same response. The press room carries nothing on the exits.

A sale question on the same sources

Skift reports that the owners had been seeking a financial buyer. One person familiar with the talks said some prospective buyers balked at the asking price. Separately, Muckermann had been speaking with bankers and capital providers about financing further hotel acquisitions.

No transaction has been announced. Kempinski has not confirmed a process. No other outlet has carried the sale claim.

The board calls the new appointments continuity

Kempinski has named Noel Attard chief development officer and Andrea Vanni chief financial officer. Skift records the board presenting both as continuity in the transformation.

Hotel vor9 went back through the Vanni announcement and flagged two points. The release carried no quote from the group chief executive. Chairman René Nijhof spoke alone. Nijhof described a remit that ran past finance: strengthen the financial structure, improve hotel performance, secure owner returns, and drive growth through acquisitions, management contracts, branded residences and market entries.

No successor to Muckermann has been named. Skift records speculation that Nijhof takes the seat on an interim basis.

The figures the day lands on

Kempinski reports 74 hotels and residences in 33 countries. Most are managed for independent owners. The majority owner is the royal family of Bahrain.

Public filings show consolidated revenue fell to €164.6 million in 2024 from €174.9 million. Management-fee revenue declined to €41.8 million. Net profit rose to €17.6 million. The management report forecast a sharp drop in 2025 pretax profit.

Three moves sat inside the turnaround. A portfolio cut from 82 hotels to 75. Thirty-four projects announced for three years. The Augustine Hotel in Prague bought outright, the first full acquisition since Munich in 1970.

Hospitality Net wrapped the day

The editorial wrap ran at 14:39 UTC under a headline that stacked all three items. Its summary credits founder and chief executive Henri Roelings with the Kempinski reporting. The item beneath it carries the Report prefix, and its substance tracks Skift.

Two more blocks sit in the same wrap, and both come from Hospitality Net’s own file.

Hotels say they are ready for AI

Destination AI Forum 2026 ran 29 and 30 September at the National Housing Center in Washington D.C. The organiser lists a sold-out house, more than 500 attendees, more than 280 companies, 80 percent senior leadership and a day and a half of sessions.

Hospitality Net’s recap, published Tuesday at 17:08 UTC, found broad readiness across the room. It found a gap in practical implementation. A second recap at 14:00 UTC covered adoption, distribution visibility and frontline gaps, with Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Wyndham on stage.

Budget the meter

Hospitality Net also ran an interview at 12:27 UTC with Terence Ronson, founder and managing director of Pertlink. The subject was budgeting for 2027 once AI runs on usage. The framework covers usage-based cost tracking, workforce investment, rolling forecasts, and two governance tools the interview names as Decision Envelopes and AI Override Rates.

The Kempinski exits hold the lead. No successor. No statement. No sale.
