Six Hotels, One Friday
Union members walked out at six Chicago hotels on Friday 9 October 2026. They timed the action two days ahead of the Chicago Marathon. Unite Here Local 1 announced it.
The hotels are the Millennium Hotel Knickerbocker Chicago, the Palmer House, the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, the Waldorf Astoria Chicago, The Westin Chicago River North and The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago. Room attendants, cooks, dishwashers, bellmen, front desk agents, servers and bartenders struck.
Karen Kent, president of Unite Here Local 1, told Hotel Dive that hundreds of workers were out. No outlet published a headcount.
The Mandate
More than 7,000 union hotel workers across 46 Chicago hotels voted 85 per cent to authorise a strike. The vote came on 22 September, roughly two weeks before the walkout. Contracts had expired on 31 August.
The union's demands are higher wages, healthcare benefits, a pension, civil rights protections and safer workloads. Skift reported that contracts had expired at 44 of the 46 hotels on 31 August and that the other two lack one.
What Kent Said
"We are still far from reaching an agreement and workers are in a desperate situation," Kent told ABC7 Chicago. She asked for "increased wage increase, increases to their retirement and significant job protection."
Kent told the Chicago Sun-Times that more negotiation dates were set. "Every week, I see more reports about how great the industry is," she said. "Okay, well, show up."
The Numbers Behind It
A 2025 Unite Here Local 1 survey found that 32 per cent of members had lacked the money for rent or a mortgage payment in the previous year. The Sun-Times reported two further findings from it: 29 per cent fell behind on utility bills, and two-thirds had hours cut in the slow season.
Maria Hernandez, press secretary for Unite Here Local 1, told the Sun-Times that hotel staffing has not returned to its pre-pandemic level. Fewer workers carry more of the work.
More Hotels Could Follow
The union says it can call strikes at other hotels at any time. A full walkout by everyone who voted would be the largest hotel strike in Chicago's history, on the union's own count. That claim rests on the wider action.
Skift, citing a source familiar with the hotels' bargaining position, reported that talks stalled on a clause that would extend union representation to other commonly owned or managed hotels in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. The same report said the parties had not discussed economic terms in substance.
Earlier in the Year
Hotel workers struck in Philadelphia and Seattle earlier in 2026 during the FIFA World Cup. The Seattle unit ratified a new contract with Hilton.
Hilton and Marriott did not reply to a Hotel Dive request for comment. Hyatt's contracts sit in the same dispute, and Hotel Dive did not say whether it replied.
