Three Dates, One Build
Indiana University Health broke ground on its downtown Indianapolis hospital campus in March 2022. Wilhelm | Gilbane topped out the hospital at the end of May 2025, during Construction Safety Week. The health system's project page answers its own opening question with December 2027, and Inside INdiana Business reports the campus on schedule.
The campus spans 44 acres from 12th to 16th streets and from Capitol Avenue to Interstate 65, about eight square blocks. The health system has not revealed the hospital's name.
What the Campus Holds
The hospital carries 864 inpatient rooms, 50 operating rooms and 110 emergency department care spaces, per the project page. Three 16-storey towers hold 1 million square feet of inpatient care and 380 outpatient exam rooms. Each patient room runs 300 square feet and can switch to critical care, per Inside INdiana Business.
Four buildings sit around it: a five-storey medical office building for offices, clinical space and retail; a south support building with 2,600 parking spaces and room for 22 semi-trailers; a two-storey 78,500-square-foot utility plant; and the IU School of Medicine education and research building.
The Money
The health system puts the complex at 4.3 billion dollars. That breaks into 2.3 billion dollars for the hospital and 1.98 billion dollars for the supporting buildings and neighbouring properties. Curis Design is the architect, with HOK as executive architect.
Where the Work Stands
Inside INdiana Business put the campus about 60 percent complete on 1 April 2026, with about 1,500 construction workers on site. Exterior work was winding down. By mid-summer 48 of the hospital's 56 elevators would be in place, and the last crane was due down within the month.
What It Does to the Trade
All clinical specialties move to the new hospital, including the emergency department, per the project page. Methodist Hospital sits beside the campus at West 16th Street and North Capitol Avenue. University Hospital stands about a mile and a half away on the IU Indianapolis campus.
HVS reads the campus as steady weekday demand for extended-stay and midscale hotels from medical professionals, faculty, patients and families.
