SJM reports a Greater China first in Macau
SJM Resorts announced on 17 September 2026 that Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau has become the first integrated MICE venue in Greater China to reach sustained carbon neutrality through high-quality carbon credits. The company also launched Macau's first standardised Zero-Carbon MICE Service.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council carried the item on its own site on 24 September 2026.
Daisy Ho on the method
Daisy Ho, managing director of SJM, said sustainability is part of the company's business strategy. She said SJM aims to give MICE clients “measurable, verifiable and disclosure-ready environmental data” for their sustainability objectives. On the credit method, she said SJM will use carbon credits from Portuguese-speaking countries, drawing on Macau's position as “One Centre, One Platform.”
What the Zero-Carbon MICE service covers
SJM describes the offer as a one-stop solution for planning and delivering sustainable events at Grand Lisboa Palace. The release lists five components: sustainable event planning, environmentally responsible venue setup and recycling, sustainable catering options, event impact reporting and carbon-neutral event certification.
Corporate clients receive carbon emissions data and supporting documentation that SJM says supports ESG reporting and sustainability performance management.
The credit portfolio and the emissions figure
SJM states that the venue's average annual greenhouse gas emissions for 2025 and 2026 came to about 5,827 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. The company says it fully offset both years through carbon credits from Portuguese-speaking countries, China Certified Emission Reductions and carbon removal projects.
SJM says Wu Jianfeng, director of the Macau International Carbon Emission Exchange, presented the carbon neutrality certification to Daisy Ho at the event.
The MOU signed at the forum
SJM hosted the SJM Green MICE Forum and Zero-Carbon MICE Product Launch to mark the launch. At the event, SJM signed a memorandum of understanding on end-to-end carbon neutrality collaboration with the Macau International Carbon Emission Exchange.
The forum programme
SJM says the forum brought together more than 150 industry leaders and sustainability experts. Zhang Jianyu, executive board director of the China Association for NGO Cooperation, gave a keynote titled “The Multidimensional Value of the Green MICE Economy.” Lei Xuejing, marketing director of the Macau International Carbon Emission Exchange, spoke on the global market for high-quality carbon credits.
A roundtable covered ESG practices in tourism and leisure, innovation in sustainable value creation and cross-sector collaboration. The panel was Brian Ho, vice president of sustainability at SJM; Vincent Tse, vice president of the Macao Green and Low Carbon Industry Association; Rita Kuan, market strategy manager at GSTC; and Alvin Lee, head of supply at Puro.earth.
The certifications behind the service
SJM says the Zero-Carbon MICE offering rests on three credentials. Grand Lisboa Palace holds ISO 20121:2024 Event Sustainability Management System certification and LEED Silver certification, and SJM is a member of GSTC.
